Emerald by day, ruby by night - Alexandrite

Today is one of those memorable day for me being in the gemstone family. I was given an opportunity to hold Alexandrite, one of the top 10 rarest gemstone on earth. It was such a humbling experience to see such magic and beauty. It was an experience that makes me understand that the earth really has been a million years old to produce such a remarkable mineral within. The magic that was hidden prior to the civilization before us.


The Gemstone Alexandrite is a highly valuable and rare gem that falls under the chrysoberyl mineral family, and the mineral displays sharp changes of color. “Emerald by day, ruby by night,” alexandrite is a breathtakingly beautiful gemstones displaying one of the most remarkable color changes gemstones in the world. That's to say, from blue to green during daylight, and it turns purplish, brownish-red, or red when exposed to an artificial light. Known as one of the 10 rarest gemstones in the world, Alexandrite is the third hardest natural crystal after diamond and corundum.


Known as the modern birthstone for June, Alexandrite was only found in April 1834. It was named after the Russian Tsar Alexander II (1818-1881), the mineral was first discovered in Russia, in particularly in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River near the Ural Mountains. But currently, other locations that are rich in the mineral were discovered, and these include East Africa, Brazil, and Sri Lanka.


There are standard color grading systems used to determine the value and color of the gemstone, and the colored gems include sapphires, topaz, rubies, aquamarine, and emeralds. As for alexandrite, the more prominent the color changing behaviour of the stone, the higher the value of the gemstone. The gemstone's clarity depends on the impurities that are discovered in the matrix of the gemstone, and it helps in setting the value of the gems (GIA, 2020, p. 1).


A gemstone is cut with a top to bottom shape, or sometimes industries call it crown and pavilion. Carats are the measurements of the weight of the stone, and this also contributes to the value and desirability of the mineral (GIA, 2020, p. 2). When added to a piece of jewelry, the gemstone keeps on changing its colors, thus making the jewelry appear unique, attractive, and beautiful. Alexandrite being highly valuable and rare makes it appear magical and beautiful (GIA, 2020, p. 3).


There are various benefits of gemstones Alexandrite on its wearer. It helps develop a good reputation, fortune, and prosperity for the wearer of the rare gemstone (GIA, 2020, p. 5). Besides, according to some believes, it heals some of the apprehensive issues and helps in the nerve cells regeneration, and it also alleviates issues related to the pancreas, leukemia, and spleen.
